Ferries

At some point in your stay you are likely to want to cross the river or even travel further afield by boat.

Fowey to Polruan Passenger and Cycle Ferry

In addition to providing an essential link across Fowey harbour for residents and tourists, the service gives access to popular local walks such as the Hall Walk and the South West Coast Footpath.

The ferry operates every day of the year apart from Christmas Day, and runs continuously during service hours, departing each side of the harbour approximately every 10 – 15 minutes.

Dogs, bicycles and pushchairs are all welcome but please be aware that the ferry is accessed by steps at each landing point. Staff are on hand to assist with pushchairs, wherever possible.

In Polruan, the ferry departs from Polruan Quay. During the winter months and summer evenings, the service runs to Town Quay (subject to tides) which is in the centre of Fowey.  During the summer months and at low tide, the daytime service runs to Whitehouse slipway which is situated on the Esplanade and a few minutes walk from Fowey’s main shopping street.

For more information visit the Polruan Ferry website or telephone: +44(0)1726 870232.

Fowey to Bodinnick Vehicle Ferry

The Bodinnick to Fowey car ferry provides easy access between mid and east Cornwall. It is ideal for day trips between Looe or Polperro in East Cornwall and Fowey and further down to west Cornwall. For walkers it provides access in particular to the Hall Walk starting or ending in Bodinnick.

The car ferry operates all year with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. However a passenger service is available on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The ferry can carry up to 15 cars at a time and provides a continuous service leaving every 10 – 15 minutes during hours of operation. Any unusual changes to their scheduled running times, during periods of bad weather, for example, are posted on their Bodinnick Ferry Facebook page.

The ferry can also accommodate foot passengers, cycles, motor homes.  I believe that the ferry will take caravans but I would strongly advise against crossing the river with a caravan.  If you are determined to do so contact the Ferry company prior to departure.

Fowey to Mevagissey Passenger Ferry

The Ferry operates 7 days per week from 25 April until 1 October weather and operational circumstances permitting. Crossing time is approximately 35 minutes.  Cycles are permitted but you should contact the operator prior to boarding.  The Ferry departs the Whitehouse slip way just off the esplanade (see the Polruan ferry map above).

The ferry provides a relaxing alternative to traveling by road.  You might even get to see a basking shark in early summer.  Be sure to dress warmly!  If you would like to visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan during your visit to Mevagissey you can take a taxi, cycle (if you take your own bike) take the bus Route No. 471 or walk
